Yeah.  It's a long story honestly.  To start with, tires.  He's been on the same set of tires all year, which finally became a serious issue this weekend.  Then... this happened..

you have a gasket go out ? That looks like a lean siezure and you guys had some bad blow by. When was the last set o rings done on that bike ? Where are you sending the cylinder off to for plating ?

Not even close.  :p  That's what happens when you don't check your ring gap.  The ring caught the exhaust port and took out a piece of it along with the piston and head.  I was actually running it a little on the rich side.  The blow by came because the bike still, amazingly, kept running.  It just ran like junk.  I don't jet for optimum power until the race.  He really doesn't need that extra hp at this point.

I've got 3 other cylinders, so I won't be sending this one off anytime soon.  Sadly, this one was JUST replated, brand new piston, and VHM "special" IanE cut insert.  Sad  It was a rather costly mistake.

Did it screw the whole thing up or did it just damage your custom insert ? I have looked long and hard at vhm heads but I can't justify the $$$$ for one with the minute power gains you get. Especialy when you can get a stock KTM head cut for about $40.

Just the insert.

Have you looked at Phathead?  I don't know if they make a version for your bike, but if they don't you can always ask if they'll develop one.  We use it on our 85.  The beauty of it is how you can change the power curve of your bike.  I use different heads at different tracks.

The big PITA with loosing this insert is it was a handmade one.  Standard ones will cost me about 70 each to replace.  This one was double that.  Sad
